My random week ends with favorites.

We all have our favorites - food, shows, book, all-things-scrapbook-related, Dr Pepper and Bon Jovi. And that's what today's post is about. All my current favorite scrapbook goodness. Here we go!

Scrapbookers

I'm sure you all have your go-to scrapbookers when looking for inspiration. You know the ones, whose layouts are like eye candy. Two of mine are Susan Weinroth and Stephanie Howell.

I love how Susan designs her pages: the colors, the pattern paper, the embellishments. She makes me want to scrapbook 12x12. Which I totally would do if my pages would look like this:

 

Added bonus - she quilts. Fantastic quilts. And not only are the front of the quilts beautiful, the backs super fun, too. I need to learn to quilt.  A couple other favorites are this ruffle card and this pillow. I also really need to sew more. For more of Susan's work, check out her blog.

Two things Stephanie does on her pages I love? Her handwriting and the way she can just sprinkle embellishments (love the butterflies) over her page and it just flows and looks so good.  I tried it once. It didn't turn out nearly as cute.

Actions

For Mother's Day, I upgraded from Photoshop Elements 4, to Photoshop Elements 8. Which means I can now use Actions, and that is very exciting. Well, at least to me, it is.  I immediately downloaded Pioneer Woman's Actions for Elements. And I immediately had a favorite - the Seventies action. Which I used on this photo of Mackenzie.

And then this one, of Emma and her friend Bree.

 

Seriously fun, and it makes me want to make every photo look like it came from the seventies.

Products

Have you seen the new Jillibean Soup line, Summer Squash Soup?  Oh how I want it. Love the colors and patterns - I already have pictures in mind to scrap with it.

Colors

I tend to use the same colors when I scrap - bright  shades of blue, green, yellow and pink. Kind of like these dresses I found at Target for Emma and Mackenzie.

I need scrapbook paper that looks just like that. In fact, how about an entire summer line built around it? Yes, please!

It's the non-events.

Hey there. I'm back with Day Four of my random week. I am not great at scrapbooking holidays and events. I still haven't scrapbooked Emma's birthday from February, and I'm not even sure if I've done Mackenzie's birthday from November. Not to mention mine or Michael's - who knows when I scrapped those last. I don't think I've done a Christmas 2009 layout yet, or well, any holiday in the last year. What I am good at is scrapbooking the little things. Personality quirks, milestones, daily happenings, stories I don't want to forget. 

I talked about this subject when I hosted back in the fall. And well, since it's something I feel strongly about, I'm going to talk about it again. I look at it this way (and this is just my personal opinion and I am in no way saying that the holidays and such are not important): When I look at Christmas photos, or Easter or Halloween, I will know what they are. I want to scrapbook the pictures whose stories I might forget and might not be obvious at first glance. I want to record the stories that really tell who we are, what we care about and make us say, "Oh yeah! I remember that!" Therefore, I stink at holidays, but am great at sleeping habits, favorite activities and funny things my kids have said.

Last month I participated in Ali Edwards Week in the Life project. Loved it. I took pictures of things I might otherwise have ignored. Of course, I still haven't put my album together, although I did post my pictures daily on my blog. In looking back over the pictures, I keep thinking of pages I want to do. While I'm not going to scrapbook a bunch of layouts based on that week, since (at some point) I'll have my Week in the Life album, there are a couple topics I am going to focus on.

I plan on doing one about our bedtime rituals. It's not one I'm doing right now, as I need to take some pictures to support it, but I do plan on completing it soon. I also will be doing one about our church. It's something I've yet to scrapbook, and with the pictures I took for this project, I have just what I need to document this important part of our lives.

Taking all the pictures for that album inspired me to take photograph the morning of our ultrasound earlier this month. I snapped pictures on the way there and in the waiting room, and even took a video before we left. When I did the layouts of my daughters' ultrasounds, I only used ultrasound pictures. This time I have pictures that support the whole story of finding out we're having a boy, and I love it.

(Again, I swear this page is not crooked!)

You know how when you go to Bob Evans they have those books for sale about the year you were born? I love to look at those. Which leads me to the next layout on my to-do list: the grocery store.
I've been saving my receipts for the last month to record the prices, as well as the items that we're purchasing. I'm going to take pictures of the outside of the store, of Emma in the Eagle's Nest and Mackenzie in the cart with me. And of course, my mismatched reusable bags.

When Mackenzie learned to climb out of her crib back in the fall, I knew that was a story I wanted to scrapbook. I took of video of her climbing out, then in Picasa I captured images as the video played. I printed those out to form a storyboard of sorts, and made this page:


Last summer, all my girls talked about was going on a picnic. We finally did it the Saturday before my husband went back to teaching and they loved it. This is one of those things that while if I were to look back on just the pictures, I'd know we were at the park eating lunch, I wouldn't have the story behind it.



It's always good to scrapbook those stories that make you laugh. Like this one. While I highly doubt I will ever forget this, I am so happy to have the entire story on paper, complete with conversations. I won't forget that I didn't recognize Lisa running by, but I know without this, I'd never remember what we said about it afterward.

A few more mini-album ideas.

Yesterday I covered some albums I'm currently working on. Today, I'd like to talk about some mini-albums I plan on completing in the future.

First up, what I'll call the holy-cow-babies-require-a-lot-of-stuff album. As we prepare for baby #3, I'm going to be taking pictures of all the baby gear, it's currently it's stored in the attic and I can't wait to get it all out. Everything we use to take care of our children we be photographed and recorded: bassinet, swing, bottles, binkies, strollers, car seats, rattles, play gym, bibs, high chair,and more. I'm also going to include pictures of each child using some of the items, like all three using the high chair. When I see baby pictures of myself, it's interesting to see what has changed and what hasn't. I want to have a record of what we use, because I'm sure when my kids are having kids, it's going be different, too. We've gone from cracking the window to monitors to video monitors and live computer feed. It makes me feel old to say this, but what will they come up with next?

Second, a zoo mini. I've had the embellishments and pictures since last summer. My youngest daughter Mackenzie went through a phase back in the fall when she was really into animals. I'd planned on doing a mini she could hold and look at as much as she wants. My goal now is to do this before baby #3 gets to his loving animals phase.

I also plan on starting an album for Mackenzie (like Emma's from yesterday's post), Emma's school album, and I'd like to start a compare/contrast mini-album once baby boy is here. I'll use photos of all three children at different ages and doing various activities they have in common.

Jody DP (Jody, from now on instead of Aussie Jody, I'm calling you Jody DP in honor of my favorite beverage, Dr Pepper.) is a fellow lover of mini-albums and this is what she had to say about them:

I love mini’s...in fact it could be said that, at times, I have mini madness. A mini is so do-able when you don’t have much time, easy to store, easy to carry and always well received as a gift. Mini’s also let you experiment with style, colours and embellishments without you feeling like it won’t fit in with your albums.

When it comes to storing my mini-albums, I've got nothing. Mine are all over the place, which has been searching when I need one. But Jody DP has them stored all nicely in a basket in her scrap area. Which would be nice when you need to find one.

And just because minis are fun, take a look at all of these. Jody DP is the mini-album queen!

She has another option posted on her blog, which you can find here. I really want one of those wire baskets.

Here are some more ideas for great mini-albums from the WCS team, so that you too can have a big pile of albums just like Jody DP:

*Mother's Day/birthday/friendship album showcasing that person's hobby: ie. for someone who gardens, do a mini full of pictures of the flowers they grow.

*Grandparents: album with pictures of them with their grandchildren, from birth to current age.

*How to Eat Cake: Have a ton of pictures from your child's first birthday eating that cake or cupcake? Start with a picture of the cake whole, include the 37 pictures you took since you snapped one each time they took a bite (because apparently that's what I did), and end with a very messy face and a completely destroyed cake. This could also work for baby's first steps, or learning to ride a bike.

*Reasons We Love You album: have children draw a picture and explain what they love about mom/dad/grandparents/aunt/uncle. You could also use a standard questionnaire for this, include questions like what does your mom always say to you, how old are your parents (always funny when the little ones answer this), what is your dad good at, etc.

*What They Love album: a mini about what that person loves - hobbies, food, shows, friends, etc.

*ABC album: each letter stands for a like/dislike/experience. This would be great for your children, as a graduation gift (applying the letters to school experiences) or anniversary gift (apply letter to things that have occurred throughout your marriage).

*ABC of Learning: give as a teacher gift, using photos to supports what was done throughout the school year.

*Grateful album - 365 things throughout the year, a month's worth of things your grateful for, using your age and being grateful for one thing each year.

*Sisters - pictures and memories throughout the years of your sister. Or brother. Or best friend.

*Childhood Favorites - this could be things from your childhood or your own children. Include toys, food, friends, activities, events, outfits.

Caution: Mini-albums in Progress

Mini-albums. I love them. Love. Them. Of course, in the interest of full-disclosure I should say that while I love them, I'm not always great at finishing them. But that's not always a bad thing. More on that later.

We've had some great examples of mini-albums here at WCS over the last year, but I wanted to give you even more ideas. Ideas for minis that you maybe hadn't though of yet, some ideas maybe you've thought of, but haven't yet acted on. Maybe today's post will be just the inspiration you need to start one.

Here's my most recent mini-album. Emma just finished her first year of preschool. Every Thursday was show-and-tell, and I kept track of what she took for each one. Well, I did my best. I definitely missed a few weeks, but I've been able to remember most of them. Originally, I'd wanted to take a picture of Emma with that day's item, but I couldn't quite remember to do that except for once, instead I'd think of it two days later then just tell myself I'd do it next week. Instead, in order to do this mini, I went around and photographed each item wherever I found it in the house.

For the title page, I photographed Emma's Show and Tell bag. She made this the first week of school. Those are her hand prints on the bag. I can't believe it made it through the school year without getting either destroyed or lost.

(Please pardon my dirty scanner. I will clean it one of these days.)

I printed each picture 2x2, placing two pictures per page, along with the date she took it to school and any comments she made that I remembered or recorded.

(In addition to cleaning my scanner, I will work on figuring out why my pages look crooked when they aren't.)

I think it will so neat for her to go back and look at this 20 or 30 years from now. To see what belongings were important enough for her to want to share them with her friends and teachers. I know I would love to have a record like this from my childhood. She took some funny stuff, the funniest being a picture of her teachers. Teachers her fellow students see every day, and the picture being one each of those students received in the mail before school started. But she loved having their picture in her room so much she wanted to share it. And that's the whole point of the album. Capturing what she, at three and four, loved and valued, what brought her joy, and what she wanted to share with others.

Now to the to the albums I haven't finished. There are two types of mini-albums, at least for me: those that are close-ended (of your camping trip or family reunion, etc.) and those that you can add to as needed. I have quite of few of the second type going on right now:

Our Christmas Ornaments I take a picture of our new ornaments each year, print them 2x2 and record who received them and who gave them.

In Any Given Week I... An all about me album that was on the American Crafts blog here.

Emma at 3 I've posted some pages from this album on my blog here and here. Of course, now that she's four, I need to change the title page. My purpose with this album is to give Emma something she can hold and look at as much as she wants. The pages are simple: not much journaling if any at all, I use themed papers and embellishments that appeal to her when I can, and I use my own handwriting. Many of these pages are ones I also create for my albums, which is where I include all the journaling. But for her, she just wants to look at the pictures, remember the occasion and enjoy seeing princess paper and Dora stickers. When she sees photos of herself, she usually says something like, "Look Mom! That's me! Remember when I..." That's what I want to hear when she looks at this album. It's made just for her, about her, to make her smile.

Upcoming pages for this album: nature walk, playground, church playgroup, dress-up, riding new bike, t-ball, soccer and more.

Happy Halloween Another simple 6x6 album capturing my children's Halloween costumes each year. While I still do full pages for my holiday album, I like having all their costumes in one place.

And so begins my completely random week.

Hey there. Erin here. Or rather, my lower half. That's what I got when I asked my husband to take a picture of me. The next shot was just my upper half. He then told me I could combine them for a complete picture. He's a funny one.

So it's Sunday night and I just finished watching the Lost finale. Did ya watch? I won't spoil it in case you haven't seen it yet, but wow. Just wow and oh my and I cried and I'm still confused. I loved it. But on to scrapbooking since I'm pretty sure you're here for that and not my Lost recap.

As my title suggests, okay, just tells you, this week will be pretty random. A different topic each day. When I couldn't come up with anything to blog about for an entire week, I decided to go with a bit of this and a bit of that. I'm going to blame my lack of preparation, and inability to focus, on being pregnant. Granted, at almost 22 weeks I'm feeling perfectly fine...but, uh, let's just go with it, shall we?

First up, inspiration. Where do you find it and what do you do with it?

I'm so not an out-of-the-box thinker. For me, scrapbooking inspiration comes from other scrapbooker's layouts. When I'm in a creative rut, I like to look at layouts that interest me, and from them I'll get either a design or topic idea. I don't keep ads, or color swatches, or the like. For the most part, I can't do much with them - I just don't think that way. But for what does work for me, I use a binder. I pull it out all the time when scrapping. It goes to crops with me. I love it.

Meet my binder. (Also, Hello Ali Edwards. I keep all my Studio A columns in the front, in case you were wondering. While I am a big Ali fan, I don't just keep a picture of her as inspiration. Also, Hello messy desk.)

In my binder, old-school magnetic photo pages. Hello old-school magnetic photo pages. While we shouldn't use you for actual photos, you're perfect for this, as well as my recipes.

I don't keep my scrapbook magazines. I'd like to say that when I get a new issue, I go through the previous one and cut out the layouts I like. But in reality, a few tend to pile up before I go through them. Once I do though, I go through my binder and pull out the layouts that no longer inspire me, and replace them with the new one. I actually have some in here that are 5 years old. I cut out layouts based on design, color, number of photos and placement, journaling, and topic.

I don't often to a complete scraplift of a page. Most often, I find one I like and use it as a starting point for my layout. Like this one I recently did.

The layout that caught by eye had a few strips of wide pleated ribbon, which for me became one strip of pleated patterned paper. This was the starting point for my page. Unfortunately, when I cut out the layouts, cut off the names. So I'd like to give this designer credit and share her page as well, but alas, I cannot.

Bulletin boards are great for collecting inspiring pieces - hang up some ads, pictures, layouts, swatches and you've got instant inspiration at your fingertips. I have one hanging above my workspace, it needs updating though. Sigh, It sort of seems to be the place where ideas go to die. Well, except for my mini-album to-do list, that I use. Otherwise I've got things up there I haven't done anything with in over a year.

I also hang my layouts on the wall above the computer using a nifty contraption from IKEA.(DEKA curtain wire ). I tend to look at these a lot when I'm trying to figure something out on a layout.I tend to go back to the same color scheme and design over and over. I find myself checking these layouts to make sure I'm not repeating myself too often. Note to self - change this out for some new pages. These are the layouts I made when I hosted the blog back in September. I'm seeing a theme here.

WCS has a Tumblr blog, (link is up top) as do team members Wendy, Elizabeth, Emily, and Jamie. They're a great way to capture images to later look back on, ya know, when you're needing inspiration. Anything you find online can be saved. It's fantastic. It's free, and no clutter. Hmm...so I'm totally thinking I need a Tumblr blog now.
