Happened so fast...

Grease had it so right! Our Summer Lovin' gallery was a total blast and it all happened so fast. August has somehow melted away but before we go, we need to take one last look back at our beautiful gallery and its lovely layouts!

 

This month our gallery featured 11 single photo layouts, 14 multiple photo layouts, and 1 minialbum. If you copied each layout, you would have scrapbooked 86 photo and told no fewer than 25 stories. This month brought lots of geometric shapes, brought to you by misting, cutting, and silhouetting. There were also a handful of negative shapes, with color peeking in from behind. Color was ever present, with nary a black and white photo to be found! Instagram continues to trend with phone photos giving our digital slr's a run for their money!

Something Different with Masks and Templates

I'm always looking for an excuse to get out some art supplies that I might have *gasp* forgotten about. Recently I pulled out some colored pencils from my basket of miscellaneous supplies and might have needed to dust them off. I have a fun and simple technique to share with you today. It has popped up on a couple of my recent layouts. All you need is a mask or template and a colored pencil. 

The masks I have been using are these two simple "handmade" circle templates. The templates were made with my Silhouette SD and some leftover cream cardstock from an invitation project.

Don't worry if you don't have a die cutting machine. Any shape punch will work too. To make a mask using a shape punch, cut a strip of paper and then punch evenly across the length of the strip.

Welcome, August!

This month, we are giving in to the heat, the humidity, and the final few lazy days. We are hoping to put our feet up and breathe in the last sights and sounds of summer: the squeals of outdoor laughter, the roar of the lawn mower, the glorious long golden light of summer evening skies, the warmth of the suns rays on our healthy summer glowing skin. Soon, alarms will be ringing, backpacks will be zipping, and school busses will be arriving. But for now, we will revel in summer's greatest glory: its parting days.

July is finishing, the Olympics beginning, and school is just around the corner. It is July! Summer is in full heat here above the equator!! We hope that you are enjoying your summer and our Summertime Dailies!!

While tomorrow is the first of the month, you know we like our Sundays quiet, and we are super excited to share our big news with you, so we are here today, rather than Monday! We hope you don't mind! Before we get to our new gallery, let's start with our exciting announcement!!

 

While we thought it was fun to announce that we were having a talent search, it doesn't at all compare to announcing our decision! Yes, it's true, we picked two!! Jennifer and Katie, we are so very happy to have you on our team! We know that you will be fantastic additions to our little family and know that the readers are going to love you as much as we already do!! And we are looking forward to sharing the talents of the finalists with you as well in the upcoming months!

 

The theme this month, is Five is Fun! Every now and again, we like to challenge ourselves (and you!) to limit the number of products we put on a layout. And even though we try to begin with the required five products, sometimes five items can suddenly become five groups, or five items plus one (or six!), or five if you don't include paper. Or maybe you need to stretch to five by counting up the fonts separately!!

No worries, we bought some doughnuts for the scrapbook police so hurry and count out your five'ish products while the uniforms are distracted!

 

We are, of course, teasing! Because the scrapbook police aren't real, you may choose as many as you wish. But know that sometimes it is fun to try something new! Perhaps you can begin by finding your three favorites and then building your layout from there. With all the summer activities you have planned, sneaking in a five product layout before breakfast might be the perfect way to get a layout or two finished, too! And still have time for a hike or a swim! Just like our team did!

So take five! Products, that is, and have fun with a Five is Fun! layout!

In Review

Every month I sit to write and I think, "Really? A whole month has already passed?" And then I shake my head, sigh, and recall what a fabulous month it has been.

June began with a fun birthday celebration. After much hemming and hawing about whether it was 3 or 4 (why is it that we turn our birthday number at the end of our year, rather than at the beginning??), we ate some virtual cupcakes and were thrilled to have some new team members, a new gallery, a talent search, and a giveaway! Woohoo! Who cares about the number, after all! We're just happy to be here with you!

With the return of our summer dailies posting series, we have already been honored to learn from Marnie, Vivian, Lisa, Emily, Monika, Diane, Amy, Emily, Paula, Francine, Celeste, our new Valerie, Donna, our also new Teka, and Katrina. We have addressed school's end, summertime, beaches, flags, fathers, and reading. No Photo? No Problem.

I have this funny little story that needs to be on a layout, but I don't have a photo. What is a scrapbooker to do?

Make the layout anyway! Tell that story—photo or no photo. The other day I did just that. I made an 8 x 8 layout and have plans of doing many more, then compiling them into a mini album. I want to capture more of the funny little things my 3-year-old does or says. I've already got some of them written in a notebook and ready for a layout. Sometimes I may have a photo or two, sometimes I won't, and I am completely okay with that. Here's the layout I created about the funny little mishap that happened at church before my cousin's graduation a couple weeks ago:

Additional ideas for layouts without photos

• Use memorabilia like tickets stubs or programs in place of pictures.
• Think art journal and get messy with paints, ink, modeling paste, etc.
• Let your child draw a picture of the story if it's about them.
• Go big, bold, and graphic with your title.
• Let your main thought be the title and allow it to fill the page.
• Use your die-cutting machine to cut shapes that fit with your story.
• Take advantage of all that extra white space you may have. Just let it be—white space is good!
• Mix and match all those letter stickers you have laying around for added interest.
• Have fun with patterned paper.

Welcome! For our photography challenges, we are going to look to this month's gallery to find three different photography subjects.

1. Snapshots

The first tip I want to give when it comes to snapshots is clearly to have your camera out and ready at all times. I don't have small kids, but even if you do just keep your camera on a higher counter or shelf. Just to have it ready when you need it.

The next tip is that it is okay to do properly compose a "snapshot," too. It still is a snapshot, even if you make some adjustments. For example, try to not shot against the sun or a window if you are inside, because you will probably just end up with a shadow as your subject. Just take a few steps in either direction so that you have a better angle.

Lastly, while zooming in close has its benefits, sometimes, the surroundings help tell a bit of the story as well! Look for it for perspective and context.

As you look to take some snapshots, consider following Celeste's lead and take a quick snap of each of your family members. Then don't forget to put the pics on a layout!!

 

2. Celebrations

Parties, and other celebrations are fun to photograph. For me, this mostly happens around birthdays.A new favorite thing to do is to take a photo through someone else's viewfinder like the photo above. I have done this at weddings too. It gives another perspective!

 

When you want to take photos of someone blowing out candles, be ready both before and after the candles are out, something like this can happen :)  My daughter's cousin thought she was too slow so he leaned in and blew out her candle!

Also try to look around the room, there is always something going on while people wait to see the birthday child open presents etc. There can be lots of emotions. Look for them.

 

Go backstage. I mean when at a party sneak into the kitchen to see the preparations and also catch the details from the party. My example above is from my sister's 40th birthday party. We joked about her having so many candles she had to have two cakes! So I made sure I took a picture of those candles.

 

And when you scrapbook those celebration photos and can't decide on which photos to include, just make a mosaic. Just look at how many photos I could use in this layout!

 

I like to have my camera set to take sequences. It's very helpful at parties. As you can see from my layout, I wanted to catch my daughter's expression when she opened her gift and then when she saw what she got!

 

Our new team member Valerie O´Neall shares this fun birthday layout. I love that she cut her photos into circles! 

3. Pets

Pets are much like kids; they move around a lot! I have had some practice photographing pets since we have so many :) I like to follow them around with my camera and take photos of them in the different places they end up playing or resting. While my pets are now used to me having that big camera in front of my face, the first night Dixon (our lab) spent the night at our house, I wanted to take a close up of him while he slept. He woke up with this big lens in his face, got scared and barked at me so loudly I think I might peed my pants :) He is totally used to it now though!

I have so much fun taking photos of them doing what they love to do. Outside it is pretty easy to capture them even when they are moving around because the light is mostly good.

 

Inside I almost never use my flash. I just sit my camera on something, like a table or something so that the image doesn´t get too blurry. If they still get blurry I turn them black and white :)

And having scrapbook pages in your album about your pets is so much fun!

Before you hop away...

Did you notice some new names up there? We thought you might have. We are thrilled beyond measure to announce the addition of 5 new team members. (We actually have 6 new ones, but you are going to have to wait for one whole month to meet the other! heehee!!)

We are excited for all of you to fall in love with them as we have. Not only are they talented scrapbookers, but they are kind, lovely women with a point of view, a story to tell, and some amazing creativity oozing out of them! If you click on their photo, it will take you to their bio pages so you can read a little more about them. And as you visit their blogs on the bloghop, please take a minute to say hello and introduce yourself to them. Be forewarned that you might get lost in their talented creations!

 

You may also have noticed a few names missing from the list. Aly, Karen, Stacy, Wendy, and Cheryl are all turning in their keys, so to speak. Stacy, Aly, and Cheryl have all been with us from the beginning. We cannot thank them enough for their kindness and hard work. And while Karen and Wendy added later, they, too, left an indelible impression on our site. We will miss them; not just their talent, but also their hearts. We look forward to seeing them in other places and wish them tremendous success and happiness.

If you have longed to be a part of the write. click. scrapbook. team, now is your chance! We are excited to open up a team spot to one of you! We want to fill it with someone who knows us and loves us. Someone who will help make us great and will shout from the rooftops that write. click. scrapbook. is one awesome scrapbooking site.

As a write. click. scrapbook. teammate you will be responsible to provide a minimum of one layout per month for our monthly galleries, and you will host the blog for one week, and a handful of single days. Team members also help one another by providing pertinent layouts to support the other blog authors.

We love pages that are well-designed, and tell good stories. Our teammates not only scrapbook well, but also write well, as they must share their love and knowledge of scrapbooking through a week of blogging. Good photography is an asset as well.

If you would like to be considered, please put together a sample blog post, on your topic of choice. Additionally, please create a layout or project that will fit under the topic, Summer Fun. We will accept applications through June 23rd. Please know we will also browse through your blog to get a feel for your writing style and personality. The new team member will be notified prior to July 1st. Please send your application materials to marnie@writeclickscrapbook.com.

To review we need:

1. a sample blog post on a topic of your choosing,
2. a layout that fits the theme Summer Fun,
3. a link to your blog,
4. a link to your sample blog post, and
5. a bit about why you want to be on our team.
